Karina (kah-ree-nah)
Karina were cats crossed with owls. They were nocturnal creatures most active at night. It was rare for them to be kept as pets, due to their aggressive nature when threatened. They gave birth to live kittens in nests traditionally built into hollow trees and cliff edges. Kittens didn’t gain the ability to fly until they were six months old.
Debate ranged throughout history whether the karina should be considered a feline or a bird. It was decided by the Fabellan World Court that they should be classified as birds. The decision remained unpopular for years as animal rights groups fought to have it reversed.
