Axhandle Hound (ahks-hahnd-l how-nd)
The axehandle hound was a dog with a pronounced slope in their muzzle making their head look like an axe. A more appropriate name would be axeHEAD hound. They were scent hounds, bred to hunt alphyns. The breed standards’ guidelines for showing axehandle hounds required them to be 21–25 inches (53–64 cm) tall at the withers. The legs were muscular, straight-boned, and the paws were rounded, almost cat-like. The axehandle hound came in a combination of, tan, red, or black with a white base. They were pack hounds, therefore, it got along well with other dogs and enjoyed companionship.
The axehandle hound had a very docile and sweet demeanor. A typical dog was gentle, easygoing and got along with children and other animals. However, they acted shy and reserved around strangers. They were a very active breed with very high energy and required a lot of exercise. Hounds did best in habitats where they had room to run. If they lived in a suburban area such as a neighborhood, they needed fenced in yard and multiple walks daily.
