We open on Orgo, a troll, who survives a near-death experience during the construction of colossal obelisks in the Puntian Empire.
Orgo tries to go back to his old life following the accident but he can’t. Like everyone who has a brush with death, Orgo wonders if there might be something more to life. Puntian society lives under a strict code of twelve commandments passed down from Lord Lukis. Orgo seeks to personally commune with Lukis, but harpies maintain only they can commune with the Lord.
Undaunted, Orgo keeps trying to talk to Lukis. Sumal, an elven maiden, hears of his mission and visits with Orgo. Sumal asks Orgo about his faith in Lord Lukis. Orgo has never actually prayed to the Lord before and his relationship to the God of Fabella is shaky at best.
Sumal returns to Orgo repeatedly to discuss the topics of self-actualization, life, love, and theology. From these discussions, Orgo has an epiphany to start the foundations of a new religion called Selfism.
Selfism works by having a minister meet one on one for weekly discussions with their disciples about their faith. It’s more personal than preaching a catch-all message. Ministers are encouraged to keep these meetings confidential as a way of promoting honesty and lowering a disciples’ anxiety in confessing sin. Nobody has to feel like they’re left behind or not listened to. They all get that one on one relationship with the lord at the center to help them pursue a life of righteousness.
When Orgo shares his findings with the community the harpies accuse him of spreading lies. They denounce Selfism and persecute anyone who practices it. Orgo becomes depressed. The few disciples he’s convinced start to leave Selfism. Orgo is now ostracized by the community for his blasphemy. Forced to acknowledge that this foolish quest has caused him to lose all his friends and family, Orgo is prepared to leave Selfism behind.
Sumal returns one final time to reveal that she is Lord Lukis. Creating Selfism is Orgo’s life purpose and even though he’s down and out there’s still a fire burning within him that cannot be extinguished. There are still disciples that need to be ministered to on a one to one basis. Orgo can’t quit and recommits himself to the cause.
We close as Orgo ministers to a child and creates the twelve candles of Selfism. Similar to lighting a menorah, members of the Selfist faith are called to light a candle each month after they complete one of the twelve tenets of Selfism and closeness with Lord Lukis. Self-worth, life, love, integrity, respect, perseverance, self-control, trust, unity, work, grace, and repentance. Only then can they enter the realm of heaven in peace with an indomitable spirit.
