Niflhel (nifl-hehl)
Niflhel was an ancient underwater empire exclusively inhabited by merfolk. It was started by King Subachamen and quickly arose as a major subterranean center of trade and commerce. Their greatest claim to fame found them being major players in the Sea People’s Rebellion. This point in history was often remembered for the large amount of lives lost during the war. The day of the Battle at Embasin Cove was regarded as a time of mourning until the kingdom ultimately fell to ruin.
It’s people were called “Niflhelians.” It was one of the earliest and largest kingdoms in Fabella for its age. It was further divided into city states Coralmari, Vaporin, Glacia, and Ebira. At its height, the kingdom was ruled by the Oceanus Dynasty.
History
Age of Dynasties
Puntian Empire
Niflhel developed during the Age of Dynasties as a sister kingdom to the Puntian Empire. Titans Oceanus and his wife Tethys were recruited to serve as dieties by Chronos. Tension between Niflhel and Punt developed almost immediately, due in part to the harpy leadership in the First Dynasty of Punt. Niflhelians believed they were unfairly discriminated against for their aquatic lifestyle and the animosity only grew from there.
The Sea People’s Rebellion
Oceanus and Tethys rebelled against the Titans to save the lives of the Sentinels. From that point forward, they were in direct conflict with the Puntian Empire. The army was formed by the Sentinels and other city states in the area. The Battle of Embasin Cove ended Niflhel involvement in the rebellion and they retreated to fortify their independent boundaries.
Alliance with Fantasia
Niflhel started an alliance with the Republic of Fantasia, though they refused to engage in any conflict against the Puntian Empire. Trade was the cornerstone of this alliance as Niflhel provided goods and building materials to the fledging nation in exchange for education on magic. It was thanks to their alliance with Niflhel that Fantasia was able to rise as quickly as it did.
