Pixie (pik-see)
Pixies were wild creatures similar to fairies. They were about an inch and half in height. A swarm was extremely deadly. Blood was the pixie’s number one source of food. They bit a chosen host to suck small fraction of their blood. Most of this blood was for later distribution to their colony’s queen who needed it to keep producing eggs. If the prey started to fight back, they would release a poison that could be deadly if gone untreated. A small part of the blood was absorbed into their own bodies, which was possibly why they were so malnourished. One pixie sucked the blood of at least ten hosts per day to even stay alive. A queen gave birth to all pixie eggs. All the other pixies were female workers dedicated to either building the hive or bringing back blood. Queens would give birth to several dozen eggs at one time. Male drones aged faster and had a much lower life expectancy than the female workers. They were only around to inseminate the queen, then they quickly died.
The big bulbous head of the pixie was a sharp contrast to its skeletal frame. It might have been less of an oddity if the pixie was able to keep a bit more of the blood they collect in their bodies. Their thin translucent wings beat so fast at times that they were nearly invisible and it looked like the creature was actually floating. Communication was mostly done through the use of pheromones and antennae signals. Their hair changed color with the leaves to aid in keeping them camouflaged against the environment. Many of Fabella’s inhabitants were quite a bit larger than the pixie so they needed all the help they could get not to end up smashed by a rogue hand.
